WELCOME TO MERRIAM-WEBSTER'S SPELL CHECKER!
Version 1.0a
A spell checker is only as good as the word list it uses to
check your spelling. This CD-ROM includes a powerful program
that automatically expands the list of words your spell checker
is based on to include all the words you'd expect to find in a
world-class Merriam-Webster dictionary.
The following README file contains important information about
installing and using this product on your computer. Please
read it carefully before you begin using your new software.

Checking Your Installation
*************************************************
To test whether your spell checker installed
successfully, open a document in the word processing
program you are using the Merriam-Webster's Spell
Checker with and look up the following words:
newbie
bafflegab
mosh
aerobicize
netiquette
If your Spell Checker installed successfully, these
words will not be flagged as misspellings or unknown
terms.
*************************************************
Installing the Spell Checker Manually
*************************************************
If the Spell Checker will not install successfully, it
is a simple matter to install it manually:
1. Locate the spell checker dictionary file of the
application you want to use Merriam-Webster's Spell
Checker with. You can do this by using your
system's "Find" feature to search for the file by
name. The files to search for are:
mssp2_en.lex (Microsoft Office and MS Works)
lotusen1.dic (Lotus Notes)
both lotusen2.dic and lotusen3.dic (Lotus
SmartSuite)
English Dictionary (Microsoft Office for
Macintosh)
(Because Lotus SmartSuite uses two spell checker
dictionary files, you'll have to perform each of the
following steps twice with this suite.)
2. Rename the application's spell checker dictionary file
so you don't overwrite it. Make a note of the original
name--you'll need it later.
3. Locate the file Mw329809.dat (MW Dictionary if you have
a Macintosh) on the installation disk and copy it to the
directory where you found the application's spell checker
dictionary file.
4. Rename Mw329809.dat (or MW Dictionary for Mac users) to the
name of the application's original spell checker dictionary
file.
5. Macintosh users may have to restart their computers to
activate the new spell checker.
*************************************************
Do You Have Multiple Versions of the Target Application?
*************************************************
If you have two or more copies of Microsoft Word or any of
the other target applications, you may have trouble
installing Merriam-Webster's Spell Checker in the version
you wish to use. We suggest installing the Spell Checker
manually in the version(s) of your choice. See the
instructions above.
*************************************************
