  4. A spell checker is only as good as the word list it uses to 
  5. check your spelling. This CD-ROM includes a powerful program 
  6. that automatically expands the list of words your spell checker 
  7. is based on to include all the words you'd expect to find in a
  8. world-class Merriam-Webster dictionary.

  10. The following README file contains important information about
  11. installing and using this product on your computer.  Please 
  12. read it carefully before you begin using your new software.

  62. Installing the Spell Checker

  65. NOTE: It is strongly recommended that you exit all programs
  66. before running the Setup program for your new spell checker.

  70. 1.  Insert the CD-ROM into the appropriate drive.
  71.  
  72. 2.  Open Windows Explorer and click on your CD-ROM drive letter.
  73.  
  74. 3.  Click on the file called SETUP.
  75.  
  76. 4.  Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

  81. 1.  Insert the CD-ROM into the appropriate drive.

  83. 2.  Click on the CD-ROM icon.

  89. NOTE: When the installation is complete, you may need to 
  90. restart your computer to enable your system to detect the
  91. new spell checker.

  95. Uninstalling the Spell Checker
  96. *************************************************
  97. If you want to restore your spell-checker's original word list 
  98. and remove the files installed with this product, take the 
  99. following steps:
  100.  
  101. NOTE: It is strongly recommended that you exit all programs
  102. before running the Uninstall program.  
  103.  
  104. WINDOWS
  105.  
  106. 1.  Click on the Start button, choose Programs, and open the 
  107.     M-W Spell Checker program group (you may have chosen a 
  108.     different name for this group).
  109.  
  110. 2.  Click on UNINSTALL.
  111.  
  112. 3.  Follow the directions on the screen.
  113.  
  114. You may have to delete the "MW Spell Checker" program 
  115. directory manually.
  116.  
  117.  
  118. MACINTOSH
  119.  
  120. 1.  Insert the CD-ROM.
  121.  
  122. 2.  Click on the CD-ROM icon.
  123.  
  124. 3.  Click on the file called SETUP.
  125.  
  126. 4.  Click through the splash screen and license agreement;
  127.     on the third screen click on the pull-down menu labeled 
  128.     "Easy Install" and select "Remove."
  129.  
  130. 5.  Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
  131.  
  132. NOTE: When the uninstall is complete, you may need to 
  133. restart your computer to enable your system to detect the 
  134. restored spell checker.

  136.

  138. Checking Your Installation
  139. *************************************************
  140. To test whether your spell checker installed 
  141. successfully, open a document in the word processing
  142. program you are using the Merriam-Webster's Spell 
  143. Checker with and look up the following words:
  144.  
  145.     newbie
  146.     bafflegab
  147.     mosh
  148.     aerobicize
  149.     netiquette
  150.  
  151. If your Spell Checker installed successfully, these 
  152. words will not be flagged as misspellings or unknown 
  153. terms.
  154.  
  155.  
  156. *************************************************
  157. Installing the Spell Checker Manually
  158. *************************************************
  159. If the Spell Checker will not install successfully, it 
  160. is a simple matter to install it manually:
  161.  
  162. 1. Locate the spell checker dictionary file of the 
  163.    application you want to use Merriam-Webster's Spell
  164.    Checker with.  You can do this by using your 
  165.    system's "Find" feature to search for the file by 
  166.    name.  The files to search for are:
  167.  
  168.     mssp2_en.lex (Microsoft Office and MS Works)
  169.  
  170.     lotusen1.dic (Lotus Notes)
  171.     
  172.     both lotusen2.dic and lotusen3.dic (Lotus
  173.     SmartSuite)
  174.     
  175.     English Dictionary (Microsoft Office for 
  176.     Macintosh)                  
  177.        
  178.    (Because Lotus SmartSuite uses two spell checker 
  179.    dictionary files, you'll have to perform each of the
  180.    following steps twice with this suite.)
  181.  
  182. 2. Rename the application's spell checker dictionary file
  183.    so you don't overwrite it. Make a note of the original
  184.    name--you'll need it later.
  185.  
  186. 3. Locate the file Mw329809.dat (MW Dictionary if you have 
  187.    a Macintosh) on the installation disk and copy it to the 
  188.    directory where you found the application's spell checker 
  189.    dictionary file.
  190.  
  191. 4. Rename Mw329809.dat (or MW Dictionary for Mac users) to the
  192.    name of the application's original spell checker dictionary 
  193.    file.
  194.     
  195. 5. Macintosh users may have to restart their computers to 
  196.    activate the new spell checker.

  200. Do You Have Multiple Versions of the Target Application?
  201. *************************************************    
  202. If you have two or more copies of Microsoft Word or any of 
  203. the other target applications, you may have trouble 
  204. installing Merriam-Webster's Spell Checker in the version 
  205. you wish to use.  We suggest installing the Spell Checker 
  206. manually in the version(s) of your choice.  See the 
  207. instructions above.

  251.      this agreement will be for the duration of Merriam's
  252.      copyright in the SOFTWARE. You agree you will not
  253.      copy the SOFTWARE except as necessary to use it on
  254.      not more than two single computers in accordance with
  255.      the terms of this license. You may install the SOFTWARE
  256.      on not more than two computers, provided that there is
  257.      no possibility that the SOFTWARE can be used on more
  258.      than one computer at any given time. You agree that you
  259.      may not copy the written materials accompanying the
  260.      SOFTWARE. You may assign your rights under this
  261.      Agreement to a third party who agrees in writing to be

  268. 2.   Copyright.   You acknowledge that no title to the copyright

  270.      SOFTWARE is transferred to you. You further
  271.      acknowledge that title and full ownership rights to the
  272.      SOFTWARE will remain the exclusive property of Merriam,
  273.      and you will not acquire any rights to the SOFTWARE
  274.      except as expressly set forth above. You agree that any
  275.      copies of the SOFTWARE will contain the same proprietary
  276.      notices which appear on and in the SOFTWARE.

  278. 3.   Reverse Engineering.  You agree that you will not attempt,
  279.      and if you are a corporation, you will use your best efforts to
  280.      prevent your employees and contractors from attempting, to
  281.      reverse compile, modify, translate, or disassemble the
  282.      SOFTWARE in whole or in part.

  284. 4.   Limited Warranty.  Merriam warrants that the SOFTWARE
  285.      will perform substantially in accordance with the accompanying
  286.      documentation and that the documentation and diskettes are free
  287.      from any physical defects for a period of ninety (90) days from 
  288.      the date of purchase ("Limited Warranty"). EXCEPT FOR THE
  289.      FOREGOING LIMITED WARRANTY, MERRIAM MAKES NO
  290.      OTHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTIES TO THE 
  291.      EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW AND SPECIFICALLY 
  292.      DISCLAIMS THE WARRANTIES OF NON-INFRINGEMENT 
  293.      OF THIRD PARTY RIGHTS, MERCHANTABILITY AND

  311.      KIND ARISING OUT OF THE USE OF THE MERRIAM
  312.      SOFTWARE, EVEN IF MERRIAM HAS BEEN ADVISED OF
  313.      THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. IN NO EVENT WILL
  314.      MERRIAM'S LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM, WHETHER IN
  315.      CONTRACT, TORT OR ANY OTHER THEORY OF LIABILITY,
  316.      EXCEED THE LICENSE FEE PAID BY YOU.

  318. 6.   Customer Remedies.   Merriam's entire liability and your 
  319.      sole and exclusive remedy with respect to the 
  320.      SOFTWARE shall be, at Merriam's option, either to (a) 
  321.      correct the error, (b) help you work around or avoid the 
  322.      error or (c) authorize a refund, so long as the
  323.      SOFTWARE documentation and diskettes are returned 
  324.      to Merriam with a copy of your receipt. This Limited 
  325.      Warranty is void if failure of the SOFTWARE 
  326.      has resulted from accident, abuse, or misapplication. 
  327.      Any replacement SOFTWARE will be warranted 
  328.      for the remainder of the original warranty period.
  329.  
  330. 7.   Severability.   In the event of invalidity of any 
  331.      provision of this Agreement, the parties agree that such 
  332.      invalidity shall not affect the validity of the remaining 
  333.      portions of this Agreement.
  334.  
  335. 8.   Export.   You agree that you will not export or re-export 
  336.      the SOFTWARE without the appropriate United 
  337.      States or foreign government licenses.
  338.  
  339. 9.   Governing Law.   This Agreement will be governed by the
  340.      laws of Massachusetts as they are applied to agreements
  341.      between Massachusetts residents entered into and to be
  342.      performed entirely within Massachusetts.
  343.  
  344. 10.  Entire Agreement.   This is the entire agreement between
  345.      you and Merriam which supersedes any prior agreement,
  346.      whether written or oral, relating to the subject matter 
  347.      of this Agreement.
